Bigbury-on-Sea
Bigbury-on-Sea is opposite Burgh Island with its art deco hotel and Agatha Christie connections along with a 14th century pub the Pilchard Inn which used to be a favourite haunt for smugglers. This wonderful unspoilt island is a natural bird sanctuary and can be reached on foot at low tide or by the Burgh Island Sea Tractor at high tide. Bigbury beach is a wonderful sandy beach with miles of golden sand. It is renowned for kite surfing and is a great spot for dogs in the low season – in high season dogs are allowed on part of the beach. For surfing you can go just round the corner to Challaborough.
The small village of Bigbury which is just 2 miles away boasts a fabulous 18 hole golf course, a good local pub, a village store and is home to the Oyster Shack, the well known fish restaurant.
Atlantic house is a five minute walk from 2 sandy beaches and within easy reach of Salcombe, Bantham, Thurlestone and Kingsbridge. There is a post office 50 yards from the house which sells all essentials. They will also do your shopping for you and put it in the house before you arrive. There is a café open all year round on Bigbury beach and from May to October there is a surf shop. On Challaborough beach you'll find a pub and fish and chip shop.
